يتم اختيار المرشحين لجوائز اللعبة من قبل لجنة تحكيم دولية تضم أكثر من 100 وسيلة إعلام عالمية ومنافذ مؤثرة معروفة بتاريخها في التقييم النقدي لألعاب الفيديو.
تجتمع هيئات التحكيم المتخصصة لفئات محددة مثل الرياضات الإلكترونية وإمكانية الوصول وأفضل التكيف. يقدم كل منفذ تصويت اقتراعًا سريًا غير مصنف يُدرج فيه أفضل خمسة اختيارات في كل فئة.
يتم تحديد المرشحين من خلال جدولة الألعاب الخمس التي تظهر بشكل متكرر في بطاقات الاقتراع هذه، مع تعادل يؤدي إلى ستة مرشحين أو أكثر.
يتم اختيار الفائزين النهائيين من خلال تصويت مختلط، حيث تساهم لجنة تحكيم التصويت بنسبة 90 بالمائة ويشكل تصويت الجمهور نسبة 10 بالمائة المتبقية. لا يشارك منتج Game Awards جيف كيلي والمجلس الاستشاري في عملية التصويت.
الألعاب المؤهلة لترشيحات The Game Awards هي عادةً تلك التي تم إصدارها قبل تاريخ محدد في شهر نوفمبر.
يجب على لجنة التحكيم تقديم ترشيحاتها في الأسابيع التي تسبق هذا الموعد النهائي، بالاعتماد على نسخ مراجعة ما قبل النشر بدلاً من الإصدارات النهائية.
قد يؤدي هذا إلى أن الألعاب المتوقعة المقرر إصدارها قبل الموعد النهائي مباشرة تكون ممثلة تمثيلاً ناقصًا في الترشيحات. تعتبر الألعاب التي تم إصدارها بعد الموعد النهائي لشهر نوفمبر مؤهلة لحفل العام التالي، مع اختلاف الموعد النهائي المحدد سنويًا.
